Second Grade

The second grade program at Caze centers on a core curriculum of subjects to ready students for real world experiences. Our second grade teachers work diligently to provide differentiated instruction to ensure success for every student.

In second grade we are providing data driven instruction by using EVSC curriculum maps, Career and College Readiness Standards, and Amplify benchmarks.

Second graders continue their literally skills through Readers Workshop, small-group instruction, reading notebooks, technology, and reading centers.

Your child will receive 90 minutes of daily instruction thorough the Workshop model, including mini lessons focusing on comprehension skills, independent reading at their own level, and phonics instruction.

We also follow the Math Workshop model using mini lessons, math centers with small group instruction and journaling. Through this model we will become fluent in addition and subtraction, learn the meaning of place value, and real world applications like telling time and counting money. We will also cover fractions and geometry.

In second grade, we use the program Amplify to collect reading and math data. They will be asked to read a passage and retell in one minute as well as answer comprehension questions on a literary story. mClass assess 5 mathematical topics including, fact fluency and finding the missing number in a sequence. But the end of the year, second grade students must hit a TRC benchmark of L as well as 87 words read per minute with 97% accuracy.

To stay up to date on what your student is doing in second grade, please check with your homeroom teacher for information regarding Class Dojo, a way to track behavior in a positive way and to communicate between teachers and families.  You can also follow Caze Elementary School on Facebook for frequent updates about events and information.  It is also very important that you read with your student every night.  Reading at home is a great way to build a love of reading with your student. Students also have homework Monday through Thursday.  Please check your student's folder nightly for notes from the teacher and to help with homework as needed.
